先说第一点，形象化。这其中又分两点来讨论，

第一是以形象化的语言来表达具体或抽象的意思。所谓形象化的语言就是指能够具体表达动作的动词等，如put, take, get, give, come, go等等。口语较好的人都知道这些单词的重要性，几乎每次说话都要用得到，而且可以和很多小品词（ on, up, off等等）搭配产生不同的意思。

举例来说, go这个词的基本意思是“去或走”的意思，但可以用来表达很多抽象的含义:

We’re both going after the same job. 我们两人都在申请同一份工作。

在汉语中，我们用的是申请、竞争、应聘这样比较正式的语言，但英语口语中用go after来表达，字面直译就是“我们两人都跟在这份工作的后面”，比较形象。

再举个例子：

How does that song go? 那首歌是怎么唱的？

汉语中我们很直接地用唱这个词，是从人的角度来考虑，而英语口语中则用go这个词来表达这首歌是“如何进行”的意思，是从歌曲的角度出发来表达同样的意思。

同样的例子大量存在，请大家仔细体会以下例句中中英文表达的差别：

1. Most of my salary goes on the rent. 我的大部分收入都交了房租了。

2. There aren’t enough chairs to go around. 这些椅子不够坐的（有人没椅子可坐）

3. A car goes with the job. 这份工作是配车的。

4. Does this jacket go with this skirt? 这件夹克配这条裙子吗？

5. Two pizzas to go. 两个匹萨，带走。

6. Does the hotel take credit card? 这个宾馆可以涮卡吗？

7. Take 5 from 12 and you’ll get 7. 12减去5等于7.

8. OK, I take it all back! 好吧，我收回我说的话。

9. That song takes me back 30 years. 那首歌让我回想起了30年以前。

10. The manager took $10 off the bill 经理给让了10块钱。

11. Please give me a hand. 请帮个忙。

12. You got me! 你把我问住了

13. I put myself entirely in your hands. 我听你的。

是不是感觉以上的表达都很形象？所以，如果我们能在口语表达中多尝试用此类形象化的词语表达抽象的内容，我们就会省掉很多力气去寻找那些正式的语汇。

形象化的第二方面体现在，“用介词来表达抽象的意思”。我们最常见的例句就是：

Who is the lady in white? 那个穿白衣服的女士是谁？

在这里我们即看不到穿这个动词，也看不到衣服这个词，只用最关键表示空间的in和表达颜色的white两个最简单的词就表达了这样一个约定俗成的含义，这也符合了我说的英语口语的第三个特点：简洁明了。稍后会详细论述。

请看以下的实例，想想同样的意思你会怎么说，你会发现这些介词能够代替我们在汉语中的很多动词甚至是整个句子：

1. I read the newspaper over breakfast. （我边吃早饭边看报纸。）

2. You can reach me at 6609823. （你打电话6609823就能找到我。）

3. Sure, I'll just sit next to the transexual from purchasing. （好的，我就坐在采购部的那个变性人旁边。）

4. You remember her from my birthday party two years ago?（还记得她吗？两年前参加过我的生日派对。）

5. I was having a little chat with Bonnie, and guess what? She happened to bring up who was behind the total head-shaving idea. （我刚和Bonnie聊过了，你猜怎么着？她碰巧告诉我是谁给她出的这个剃光头的主意。）

6. Listen, since we're on the subject...（听着，既然我们谈到了这个话题…）

7. I got really hot in my pants, so I took them off. But they must have shrunk from the sweat, or my legs expanded from the heat. I can't get them back on!(这条裤子太热，于是我就把它脱了。没想到的是，要么是因为出汗以后裤子缩水了，要么是我的腿受热膨胀了。我再也穿不回去了！)

8. A month into our marriage, he started to beat me.（结婚一个月后，他开始打我）

9. Paul knows we’re onto him.（鲍比知道我们在嘀咕他）

10. At the end, you choked on a cookie.（到后来，你被一个曲奇饼卡住了）

11. Some people are just into appearances.（有些人只看外表）

12. You're still into Monica.（你始终对莫妮卡念念不忘）

13. Daniel Meade, you’re the only one in this room who was born into his job.(丹尼尔，你是这个房间里唯一一个生来就得到这份工作的人)（指继承他父亲的工作）

14. Are you serious? After what you and Daniel have been through?（真的吗？你和丹尼尔经历了那么多？）

15. He’s staying with me through the weekend.（他整个周末都会陪着我）
