I spent last week in Brighton interpreting during a training course on waste management. When you're interpreting, you need to make very quick choices to make sure the message is communicated efficiently between all the different participants, so when the debate turned to nimbyism (from NIMBY, Not In My Backyard, which describes opposition by residents to a proposal for a new development close to them), I chose to paraphrase instead of using the English acronym.
　　上周我在布莱顿为一场关于污染治理问题的会议做口译。大会口译的时候最重要的是在极短的时间内斟酌词语，好让与会者都明白发言人的意思。所以当发言者说到nimbyism（由NIMBY而来，Not In My Backyard的缩写，是对在自己家附近建设垃圾处理场表示抗议的宣传语）时，我避开了英文缩写词，而是解释了它的具体含义。

　　Waste management facilities are rarely welcome and clearly stimulate the imagination of people fighting them: try and see if you can work out what these acronyms mean.
　　没人喜欢看到垃圾处理设备或者场地就在自家门口，所以针对此人们创造出了不少有意思的口号和缩写：

　　NIMBY - Not In My Backyard
　　NIMBY: 后院重地，生人勿入！

　　NIMSBY - Not In My Second Backyard
　　NIMSBY：第二后院，也是重地！

　　NOTE - Not On This Earth
　　NOTE：我的地盘，我说了算

　　LULU - Locally Unwanted/Undesirable Land Use
　　LULU：是非之地，请勿久留

　　NOOS - Not On Our Street
　　NOOS：街霸在此，谁敢造次

　　NOPE - Not On Planet Earth
　　NOPE: 请回火星

　　NIABY - Not In Anyone's Backyard
　　NIABY：每家的后院都是神圣不可侵犯的！

　　BANANA - Build Absolutely Nothing Anywhere Near Anything
　　BANANA：建一个拆一个，拆光为止

　　NIMEY - Not In My Election Year
　　NIMEY：选举时节，保证和谐

　　NIMFOS - Not In My Field Of Sight
　　NIMFOS：色即是空空即是色，不要让我看到不要让我看到我要清净……

　　NIMTOO - Not in My Term of Office
　　NIMTOO：本官在此，哪个敢放肆？

　　PITBY- Put It in Their Back Yard
　　PITBY：要死大家一起死

　　CALF - Citizens Against Landfill
　　CALF：统一战线，抵制垃圾场

　　PEST - Prevent Environmental Suicide Today
　　PEST：珍爱生命，拯救环境
